Making Transportation Work

What makes a modern city livable?

Good transportation is certainly one of the factors that most readily comes to mind for most people when they think about a city where they live, or have recently visited. The comparisons are readily made: how many big highways/thoroughfares they have, what level of traffic congestion they suffer from, and the quality of their public transportation among others.

In our own city, transport in its various guises is quite often a “bookend” discussion. We start our day at work with the trials and tribulations of our trip in, whatever mode we choose to use. And, at the end of the workday, we regale family and friends with the woes (or celebrations?) of the return trip.

What makes for a good system of transportation is, to us, fairly subjective. In our own experience, the more cities you visit around the world, the better your comparative base for assessing any one of them — including one’s own. Here are a few perspectives on what makes for effective transportation. Take a read or have a watch, and let us know what YOU think about the ideas presented.
